Mariss Jansons conducts the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall - May 4, 2018

The Paris audience attending the 1923 premiere of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 were expecting a work driven by the same furious energy as his ballet scores. Instead, they were surprised by a beautiful concerto with a lyrical quality and a particularly rhapsodic opening solo. The 1805 audience at the first public performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 was stunned when they were presented with this truly revolutionary work. They encountered the most powerful symphony ever written. Beethoven’s mighty “Eroica” changed the face of symphonic music and heralded the age of Romanticism. Latvian born Mariss Jansons has been the Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (BRSO) since 2003.

When: Friday, May 4, 2018, at 8 pm
Where: Carnegie Hall,
881 7th Ave, New York, NY 10019

"White Tablecloth Day" - celebrating the renewal of Latvia's independence - May 4, 2018

In 2018, Latvia celebrates a hundred years since it became an independent state.

May 4 has been chosen for special celebrations this year because of its historic meaning. On May 4, 1917, the Latgale Congress passed the decision of the ethno-cultural region of Latgale to unite with Kurzeme and Vidzeme on a shared path to an independent state. This event became a turning point in the history towards the statehood of Latvia.

Coincidentally, on May 4, 1990, the Supreme Council of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic voted for the restoration of Latvia’s sovereignty by adopting the Declaration on the Restoration of Independence and thus breaking the Soviet rule. Just like in 1918, when Latvia became an independent state in a democratic way, in 1990 Latvia regained its independence democratically.

This year on May 4, Latvians everywhere will celebrate with the new tradition of the White Tablecloth Celebration. The idea is to gather families, friends, neighbors and communities around a white-clad table, cherishing togetherness and the gift of living in a free country of our own. Anyone, anywhere in the world, may join in and create their local White Tablecloth Celebration.

In New York, Latvians and their friends are invited to mark this day as well at our own NYC White Tablecloth get-together. Please join us !

Where: Estonian House, 243, East 34th Street, New York, NY 10016.

When: Thursday, May 4, 2017, from 6:00 pm onwards.

No reservations required.

Andris Nelsons and the BSO with Hakan Hardenberger - Carnegie Hall - November 19, 2018

Latvian-born conductor maestro Andris Nelsonsand the BSO returns to Carnegie Hall with Hakan Hardenberger on November 19, one day after Latvia's 100th birthday.

Håkan Hardenberger is called on to play trumpet, piccolo trumpet, and cow horn—as well as sing and play simultaneously—in HK Gruber’s marvelously eclectic showpiece that opens the program. Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, a magnificent five-movement journey from despair to joy, is one of his most popular works. He believed that a symphony should embrace the world, and it’s all here: an opening funeral march, folk-inspired dances, a waltz, and exuberantly high spirits in the finale. The unforgettable and unsurpassable heart of the work is the Adagietto, a sublime love letter for strings and harp Mahler wrote for his wife, Alma.

Program:

HK GRUBER Aerial

When: Monday, November 19, 2018, 8 pm
